EURO 2024 is nearly here! The 2023/24 FPL season is over but I will be competing in EURO 2024 Fantasy Football. After numerous days of chopping and changing, here is the team I will likely be using for the first Matchday:
Goalkeepers
Bart Verbruggen (Netherlands)
Verbruggen (4.5m) looks like he will be the number one for the Netherlands, who will be favourites alongside France to make it out of their group. Verbruggen kept three clean sheets in qualifying – only three goalkeepers kept more.
Diogo Costa (Portugal)
Costa (5m) kept the most clean sheets out of any goalkeeper in qualifying, and represents Portugal in a group where they will be strong favourities to win.
Defenders
Théo Hernandez (France)
Hernandez (5.5m) has been a regular feature at left-back under Didier Deschamps. He has recorded six clean sheets and two assists in qualifying, displaying potential at both ends of the pitch.
Jonathan Tah (Germany)
Tah (4.5m) looks set to start alongside Antonio Rüdiger at centre-back as Germany kick-off EURO 2024 against Scotland. Germany will be favourites to win the group, so this looks like a good budget option.
Maximilian Mittelstädt (Germany)
Like Tah, Mittelstädt (4m) is another great budget option from Germany. The full-back has featured regularly under Julian Nagelsmann in the games leading up to the tournament, scoring against the Netherlands in a friendly.
Wout Faes (Belgium)
Faes (4m) may potentially feature regularly for Belgium, and for such a low price, he could deliver great value in a Belgium team that are strong favourites to progress in their group.
Nicușor Bancu (Romania)
This was a pick that I struggled with but I decided to go with another budget option to spare more money for the midfield and attack. Bancu (4m) registered nine assists and two goals for his club last season and will be looking to replicate that form for Romania.
Midfielders
Phil Foden (England)
Foden (9m) is entering this tournement as the best player in the Premier League and one of the best players in the world. He will be pivotal to England’s chances of success in a group where they will be strong favourites to win.
Florian Wirtz (Germany)
Wirtz (7.5m) is one of the most exciting young talents in the world. Since his injury, he has been instrumental in Bayer Leverkusen’s incredible unbeaten Bundesliga season and is now featuring regularly for Germany.
Dominik Szoboszlai (Hungary)
Szoboszlai (7m) is Hungary’s star player in this tournemant. He has registered nine G/As in qualifying – only Bruno Fernandes registered more in midfield.
Jorginho (Italy)
Jorginho (5m) is a budget pick for me in midfield. I’ve picked him because he features regularly for the current European champions, who I believe will just about advance from their group and potentially go further. I also hope he can score a few penalties and get a few assists.
Bruno Fernandes (Portugal)
Out of all midfielders, Fernandes (9m) recorded the most G/As in qualifying by some distance with six goals and eight assists. It looks like he will continue this form in Portugal’s favourable group.
Forwards
Romelu Lukaku (Belgium)
Lukaku (9m) has been a contast goal machine for Belgium over the years. He enters the EUROs as the top scorer in qualifying with 14 goals.
Harry Kane (England)
Kane (11m) enters the EUROs as Budesliga’s top scorer last season. He has been England’s talisman for several years and will likely be involved in most of England’s goals in this tournemant.
Kylian Mbappé (France)
Mbappé (11m) is one of the best players in the world and will be central to France’s success. He has more assists than any other forward in qualifying.
